Winter Light

We are so happy to see sunlight that the children ask to move our color blocks to the window sun space to enjoy the light. There are experiments with shadows and light. We created little candle dishes with tissue and battery candles, and had a "candlelight ceremony" with singing and our lights, with real candles burning in the middle of our friendly circle.

We use the candles at lunch time, too. They are a great incentive for calm conversation and sitting in our chairs!

We painted geometric shapes with berry baskets that took on a "snowflake" shape.

For our school wide study of Jacob Lawrence we looked at the book Jake Makes a World  and experimented with the pallet of colors that we noticed in the book. You can see our work displayed in the hall near our classroom!

We talked to the children about "painting their world" as there was a lot of color mixing and experimenting !

Whole groups of children are beginning to coalesce in play, in the dramatic play area, on the rug (we had spread a giant soft blanket which made for some picnic play) and there is sustained play in pairs in different areas of the room. We are happy to see our classroom social world becoming more communicative and cooperative!

We made honey cake this week, which was spicy and delicious! our baking required a lot of turn taking which worked out well for everyone. The children are beginning to trust that they will be heard. They are also learning that there are other children who need a turn.

And, finally, the children created their own packages which included their glitter jars :0)

Until Next Time,
Michele
