We began the weeks thinking that we would study restaurants, but that study has expanded to include buildings. Some of my favorite questions have included,"why do grownups live in houses?" and "Who built this school?" I'm not sure where the questions are coming from, but I'm sure we can find some answers!
We built with city blocks, created bird feeders, and buildings with doors and windows to hang in the sunlight. The children have enjoyed seeing the birds come to our feeders! We noticed an interest in posting things in holes of furniture, and so we created a "mailbox" from a cardboard box. There is a lot of experimental writing in the classroom, perhaps some letters will be "posted"!
We have added a new component to our classroom, in "jobs" that the children do to help our classroom run smoothly. The children might help with attendance, ringing chimes, or shaking the glitter jar for breathing. There is a job for "comforter" that we are growing into, as we learn about how we can be helpful.
This past week has been a "kindness challenge" week. Sara and I have been working to see and report the kindness of each child this week. Our observations have included children taking turns willingly, giving toys to each other, listening at circle time, and helping with clean up. The positive comments that we make help the children feel noticed and also empowers them to try again to be noticed in a positive way!
We also created "kindness" hearts, as the children thought of each child by name and with our help recorded words of kindness on a heart shape.
And in BIG news, we made pancakes in the classroom. YUM!
Until Next Time,
Michele
