Trees and Growing Things

We have just wrapped up a few weeks of learning about TREES and
Growing Things. As the world is greening up outside of our windows, we have learned how to tell a tree from another plant, and the parts of a tree. We grew things from seeds in jars at home and observed the emergence of roots and shoots.  We also created collages at home that shared our knowledge of growing things. The children were able to show what is UNDER the ground in a garden and what might be OVER the ground. They know for certain that plants need water and sunlight to grow, as evidenced by the raindrops and rainbows in their pictures.

We read many books about growing things and gardens, including A Tree is Nice, Picture a Tree, My Garden, Plant a Tiny Seed, and Ten Seeds.

A family sent in a picture of "Mr. Toad."

We played a game of "IS THIS A TREE?"

seeds sprouting!

The children shared their knowledge during our online discussions, including the statements that:

  • Flowers grow
  • You can plant seeds
  • Seeds need lots of things to make it grow
  • You need water to grow
  • water, rain, sun, and seeds make flowers
  • Seeds can feel like sand
  • You plant seeds using your hands
  • Something round might come out of the seed
  • When you put the roots in dirt a little bit of it grows
  • Roots are beautiful

ABOVE the ground, we imagined

  • A bee
  • Strawberries
  • A flower
  • Strawberries and vegetables all over the top
  • Sunshine
  • Water
  • Clouds

BELOW the ground, we imagined

  • Worms
  • Bugs
  • Digging
  • Water
  • Rocks
  • Buttons

We are thankful for the images that we are sent from families, as we get to see children in action!

We shared our work virtually and the children proudly displayed their projects.

this child created a "fruit garden" with all of their favorite fruits.

We especially like to see smiles and children outside!

Until Next Time,
Michele
